Aloin (barbaloin) is a naturally occurring anthraquinone C-glycoside found in the latex layer of aloe species, primarily Aloe vera and Aloe ferox. It is isolated through solvent extraction and crystallization techniques.
Aloin is the principal bioactive responsible for the laxative effect of aloe and also demonstrates antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. The compound is available in both aloin A and aloin B diastereomeric forms. Commercially, aloin is used in pharmaceutical laxatives, as a natural bittering agent, and in cosmetic formulations.
