Carotene encompasses a family of carotenoid hydrocarbons — primarily alpha-carotene, beta-carotene and gamma-carotene — found in carrots, palm oil, algae and other natural sources.
Mixed carotenes extracted from palm oil or carrots provide a more complex, natural colour profile than pure beta-carotene alone. Used as food colourants (E160a) and nutritional sources of pro-vitamin A activity.
