Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is a hydroxycinnamic acid ester formed between caffeic acid and quinic acid, abundantly found in green coffee beans (Coffea canephora), honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica), and sunflower seeds. It is extracted using aqueous-ethanol methods and purified by column chromatography. CGA is one of the most extensively researched plant polyphenols, with demonstrated effects on glucose metabolism, weight management, blood pressure regulation, and antioxidant defense.
It inhibits glucose-6-phosphatase. This reduces hepatic glucose output. Commercially, chlorogenic acid is used in weight management supplements, metabolic health products, and antioxidant nutraceuticals.
