Gypenosides are a group of dammarane-type triterpenoid saponins extracted from the aerial parts of Gynostemma pentaphyllum, commonly known as jiaogulan or the "immortality herb." The extraction uses aqueous-ethanol methods. This yields over 100 distinct saponins, several of which are identical to ginsenosides from Panax ginseng.
Gypenosides demonstrate adaptogenic, antioxidant, lipid-lowering, and immunomodulatory properties. Research supports their role in AMPK activation, NO-mediated vasodilation, and hepatoprotection. Commercially, gypenosides are used in adaptogenic supplements, cardiovascular health products, and traditional herbal medicine formulations.
