Hesperidin is a flavanone glycoside found abundantly in the peel of citrus fruits, particularly immature Citrus aurantium (bitter orange) and Citrus sinensis (sweet orange). It is extracted using alkaline aqueous methods and precipitated by acidification. Hesperidin is one of the most abundant flavonoids in the human diet and serves as a precursor to hesperetin upon gut metabolism.
It strengthens capillary walls, reduces venous hypertension, and improves lymphatic drainage. Hesperidin also exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and lipid-lowering properties. Commercially, it is used in vascular health supplements, pharmaceutical preparations, and as a raw material for diosmin production.
