Lac Color is extracted from the resinous secretion (shellac/sticklac) of the lac insect (Kerria lacca). The primary pigment is laccaic acid, which provides red-to-purple colour depending on pH.
Lac dye is heat-stable, light-stable and widely used in South and East Asian food manufacturing as a natural red colourant alternative to carmine (insect-derived but from a different species). Also used in textiles and cosmetics.
