Lutein is a naturally occurring xanthophyll carotenoid commercially extracted from the petals of marigold flowers (Tagetes erecta) through saponification and purification. Along with its isomer zeaxanthin, lutein is the primary pigment concentrated in the human macula, forming macular pigment that filters harmful blue light and provides antioxidant protection to retinal cells.
The AREDS2 clinical trial established lutein as a key nutrient for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) prevention. Lutein also supports skin health by protecting against UV-induced oxidative damage. It is one of the highest-volume carotenoid ingredients in the dietary supplement industry.
