Platycodin is a group of oleanane-type triterpenoid saponins, with platycodin D as the principal bioactive, extracted from the root of Platycodon grandiflorus (balloon flower or Jie Geng). The root is extracted using ethanol-water methods and standardized for total platycodin content.
Platycodin D demonstrates expectorant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and anti-obesity properties. In traditional Chinese and Korean medicine, balloon flower root is a key ingredient for resolving phlegm and supporting lung health. Commercially, platycodin is applied in respiratory health supplements, cough and cold formulations, and traditional herbal medicine products.
