Sophora japonica extract is produced from the dried flower buds (Huai Hua Mi) of Styphnolobium japonicum (syn. Sophora japonica), commonly known as the Japanese pagoda tree. The buds are one of the richest natural sources of rutin (vitamin P) and serve as the primary industrial starting material for quercetin production through acid hydrolysis.
The extract also contains kaempferol, isorhamnetin, and genistein. Rutin and quercetin from Sophora demonstrate capillary-strengthening, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-allergic properties. Commercially, Sophora japonica extract is the dominant source of bulk rutin and quercetin for the global dietary supplement, pharmaceutical, and food industries.
