Thymol (2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol) is a naturally occurring monoterpene phenol found in the essential oils of Thymus vulgaris (thyme), Origanum vulgare (oregano), and other Lamiaceae species. It is obtained through steam distillation and fractional crystallization or by synthetic routes from m-cresol.
Thymol is one of the most potent natural antimicrobial compounds, active against a broad spectrum of bacteria, fungi, and parasites. It disrupts microbial cell membranes and is the active ingredient in Listerine mouthwash. Commercially, thymol is used in oral care products, food preservatives, pharmaceutical antiseptics, veterinary parasiticides, and as a beekeeping varroa mite treatment.
