Valerian root extract is produced from the dried roots and rhizomes of Valeriana officinalis through hydroethanolic extraction. The extract is standardized for valerenic acid and its derivatives, along with iridoids (valepotriates) and sesquiterpenes. Valerenic acid modulates GABA-A receptors.
This enhances GABAergic neurotransmission to promote relaxation and sleep onset. Valerian is one of the most extensively studied and widely used natural sleep aids, with pharmacopeial monograph status in USP, EP, and WHO. Clinical evidence supports its use for improving sleep quality without morning drowsiness. Commercially, valerian extract is a leading ingredient in sleep aid supplements, relaxation products, and combination herbal sedative formulations.
