Menthol (L-menthol) is a cyclic monoterpene alcohol that activates the cold-sensitive TRPM8 receptor. This produces a characteristic cooling sensation.
Natural menthol is crystallised from dementholised mint oil (Mentha arvensis); synthetic menthol is produced from thymol or citronellal. It is the world's most consumed aroma chemical by volume, essential in confectionery, oral care, pharmaceuticals, tobacco and cosmetics.
