Neohesperidin Dihydrochalcone (NHDC) is produced by hydrogenation of neohesperidin, a natural flavanone glycoside extracted from citrus aurantium (bitter orange). The resulting dihydrochalcone derivative has intense sweetness with a slow onset and long-lasting sweet aftertaste, somewhat reminiscent of licorice. NHDC is approved as a food additive (E959) in the European Union and many other countries. It is particularly effective as a flavor modifier — at sub-sweetening concentrations, it can mask bitterness, enhance mouthfeel, and improve overall flavor perception. It is heat-stable and compatible with most food systems.
