Scutellaria baicalensis extract is produced from the dried root (Huang Qin) of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi through aqueous-ethanol extraction. The extract is rich in flavones, with baicalin, baicalein, and wogonin as the principal bioactive compounds. These flavones demonstrate potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, hepatoprotective, and neuroprotective activities.
Baicalin inhibits lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase pathways, while baicalein is a selective 12/15-lipoxygenase inhibitor. In traditional Chinese medicine, Huang Qin is used to clear heat and resolve toxins. Commercially, the extract is applied in anti-inflammatory supplements, liver health products, immune support formulations, and traditional herbal medicine.
