Sodium Polyacrylate is a synthetic polymer of acrylic acid sodium salt, produced by free-radical polymerization of sodium acrylate monomers. It is classified as a superabsorbent polymer (SAP) capable of absorbing 200–300 times its weight in deionized water.
In food industry contexts, food-grade sodium polyacrylate is used primarily as a processing aid, moisture-retention agent in certain food products (approved in specific Asian markets including China under GB 2760), and in absorbent pads for meat and seafood packaging. Its thickening mechanism differs from natural hydrocolloids — it works through polyelectrolyte chain expansion and crosslink-dependent swelling rather than entanglement. Regulatory approval for direct food contact varies significantly by jurisdiction; it is approved for limited food additive use in China and as a food contact material in the US and EU.
