Schizandrin (schisandrin A, deoxyschisandrin) is a dibenzocyclooctadiene lignan isolated from the fruit of Schisandra chinensis. It is extracted using ethanol and purified by chromatographic methods to achieve high purity.
Schizandrin is one of the principal active lignans responsible for schisandra's hepatoprotective effects, acting through enhancement of glutathione synthesis, Phase I/II enzyme modulation, and mitochondrial protection. It also demonstrates anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and cognitive-enhancing properties. Commercially, schizandrin is used in liver protection supplements, nootropic formulations, and as a pharmaceutical reference compound for hepatoprotective research.
