However, this nishtana (significant change) leniency applies only to kitniyos, not to Torah prohibitions, so wheat-based ascorbic acid remains impermissible on Pesach.
Why a Gluten-Free Label Does Not Resolve the Issue
A common misconception is that a gluten-free claim on a vitamin C product addresses its Pesach status. In reality, ascorbic acid would not contain detectable gluten regardless of whether it originated from wheat or corn. The halachic concern is about the chametz origin, not the presence of gluten protein in the final product.
For this reason, kosher certification from a recognized agency remains the most reliable way to verify that the vitamin C source is appropriate for year-round use and for Pesach.
Formats and Kosher Considerations
Non-chewable, unflavored vitamin C tablets and pills are generally the simplest format from a kosher perspective. The OU considers non-chewable pills inedible, which provides additional leniency regarding their Pesach status.
Chewable tablets and flavored vitamin C supplements require closer scrutiny. Flavoring agents, sweeteners, and coatings used in these formats may introduce non-kosher ingredients that are not present in plain ascorbic acid powder.
