Epimedium extract is obtained from the leaves of Epimedium brevicornu, E. Sagittatum, and related species (commonly known as horny goat weed or yin yang huo). Extraction uses ethanol-water systems to concentrate prenylated flavonoids, with icariin as the primary marker compound.
Icariin and its metabolites (icariside II, icaritin) demonstrate PDE5 inhibitory activity, osteogenic potential, and neuroprotective effects. The extract is traditionally used to support kidney yang, strengthen bones, and enhance vitality. Commercially, epimedium extract is applied in men's health supplements, bone density support products, and energy-enhancing nutraceutical formulations.
