Epimedium extract is obtained from the leaves of Epimedium brevicornu, E. Sagittatum, and related species (commonly known as horny goat weed or yin yang huo). Extraction uses ethanol-water systems to concentrate prenylated flavonoids, with icariin as the primary marker compound.
Icariin and its metabolites (icariside II, icaritin) demonstrate PDE5 inhibitory activity, osteogenic potential, and neuroprotective effects.
