Radix Platycodonis extract is produced from the dried root of Platycodon grandiflorus, known as Jie Geng in traditional Chinese medicine. The root is processed and extracted using water or ethanol-water methods to concentrate triterpenoid saponins, including platycodin D, deapioplatycodin D, and platycoside E.
In TCM, Jie Geng is classified as a lung-opening herb that promotes expectoration, soothes sore throat, and facilitates the upward distribution of other medicines. Modern pharmacology confirms its expectorant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and mucosal-protective activities. It is commercially used in respiratory health supplements, cough syrups, herbal formulations, and as a traditional food ingredient in East Asian cuisine.
