Diosgenin is a steroidal sapogenin derived from the rhizomes of Dioscorea species (wild yam), particularly D. Villosa and D. Nipponica, as well as fenugreek seeds.
It is obtained through acid hydrolysis of dioscin saponins followed by organic solvent extraction and crystallization. Diosgenin serves as the most important starting material for the industrial synthesis of steroid hormones including progesterone, cortisone, and DHEA. It also demonstrates anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and lipid-lowering properties. Commercially, diosgenin is used in pharmaceutical steroid manufacturing, hormonal health supplements, and research applications.
