Zeaxanthin is a naturally occurring xanthophyll carotenoid commercially extracted from marigold flowers (Tagetes erecta) or wolfberry fruit (Lycium barbarum). Along with lutein and meso-zeaxanthin, it constitutes the macular pigment that protects the central retina from blue light damage and oxidative stress. Zeaxanthin is preferentially concentrated in the fovea, the region of highest visual acuity.
The AREDS2 study established the importance of lutein and zeaxanthin supplementation for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) risk reduction. Zeaxanthin also demonstrates systemic antioxidant benefits for skin and cognitive health. It is a key ingredient in the rapidly growing eye health supplement market.
