Tests have shown STPP-based detergents can clean up to 47 percent better than those without. It also keeps soil particles suspended in the wash so they rinse away cleanly.
Because of concerns about eutrophication in lakes and rivers, many countries restricted or banned STPP in consumer detergents beginning in the 1970s, with alternatives like zeolites, citrates, and polycarboxylates replacing it. In industrial cleaning products, however, STPP remains common.

STPP is used in water treatment as a softening and anti-scaling agent. It forms soluble complexes with calcium, magnesium, and iron ions, preventing scale formation in boilers and cooling systems. It also serves as a corrosion inhibitor, a leather pre-tanning agent, a dyeing auxiliary, a ceramic deflocculant, a dispersant for pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations, and a catalyst in some organic synthesis reactions.

Food-grade STPP is approved in the United States, European Union, and other major markets under identifiers including E451(i). JECFA has established an acceptable daily intake for total phosphate consumption, and manufacturers follow maximum use levels per food category.
