Butylparaben is the butyl ester of para-hydroxybenzoic acid, belonging to the paraben family of preservatives. It is effective against a broad spectrum of molds, yeasts, and bacteria, with particular efficacy in the acidic to neutral pH range.
Butylparaben is lipophilic and exhibits stronger antimicrobial activity than shorter-chain parabens such as methylparaben and ethylparaben. In food applications, it is used alone or in combination with other parabens to achieve synergistic preservation effects. Its low water solubility makes it particularly suitable for oil-phase preservation in emulsion-based food products.
