Resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene) is a polyphenolic stilbene produced by plants as a phytoalexin defense response, commercially extracted primarily from Polygonum cuspidatum (Japanese knotweed) root and grape skin (Vitis vinifera). The trans-resveratrol isomer is the biologically active form.
Resveratrol is one of the most extensively studied natural compounds for longevity, having been shown to activate sirtuins (SIRT1), mimic caloric restriction, and support mitochondrial function. It also demonstrates cardiovascular protection, neuroprotective effects, and anti-inflammatory activity. Commercially, resveratrol is a flagship anti-aging supplement ingredient with applications in longevity, heart health, brain health, and cosmeceutical formulations.
